The word kinship has a connotation related to the idea of ​​father or mother, as the case may be. That is to say, the suffix of the word “esco” has a relationship with the way in which the relationship between people occurs. This means that kinship is the affective relationship or any other bond that exists between two or more people .

Generally, kinship is defined according to the blood relationship of one person to another, that is, blood type defines kinship. Kinship is not necessarily defined by this element, other factors can also be taken into account such as marriage, an adoption and even when there is a strong affective bond between two or more people.

Although the idea of ​​kinship is commonly related to relationships between people, there is also the case of linking kinship with some things or objects. The link, in this case, is directly related to the level of affective feeling of things by a person or even by the memories that this presents.

Returning to the subject of kinship between people, degrees of this are generally defined in families, according to the generations that pass, this means that each generation that passes, in relation to the one taken as a reference, acquires a certain degree. in that same succession. Precisely each degree acquires a name that distinguishes it.

Then, we have that the characteristics between the kinship are directly related to the affinity or consanguinity that exists between the people. In the case of legal aspects, particularly in matters of civil law, it is directly related to the relationship between parents and children. In the case of marriage, when it is considered necessary, the family relationship is taken to annul said marriage in the divorce process.

Types of kinship

Consanguinity Relationship

The factor that serves as a link is related to blood, that is, if two or more people have the same blood, it is said that the relationship is by consanguinity. In general terms, they are those that are within a family nucleus. However, we must remember that the family is not exclusive to consanguinity since there are other criteria for kinship.

Family Kinship

Kinship is defined according to the link that exists between two or more people who are related by blood and/or adoption, within a family. In other words, kinship is directly related to the family role that is assumed by taking a person as a reference, that is, an individual is father, mother, son, grandfather, uncle, cousin, etc. according to grade and genealogical branch.

Degree of kinship

The degree factor is directly related to the link criterion that exists between two or more people through the family tree, which is determined in an ascending or descending manner depending on the criteria used to determine the family degree. These degrees are clearly defined within a scheme known as a family tree.

Kinship in a straight line

In this case, the kinship is determined according to the degrees of consanguinity that exists between a relative with another from the consanguineous bond. That is, it can be the grandfather, father, son. The elementary criterion is the kinship that occurs in the ascending or descending line between the family tree. This is understood as a direct line relationship.

kinship adoption

In this particular case, the bond occurs from a legal criterion, when one seems to decide to assume rights and obligations established by law to adopt a human being as a child. That son, although he does not have a consanguineous bond, will be due to the recognition of the law itself. When this event occurs, it is recognized that between the parents and adopted children there is a kinship.

kinship affinity

In this case, rather than by the strict criterion of consanguinity, this is determined according to the affective relationship that exists between two or more people. Clearly, the affective bond is taken into account as an elementary criterion. It can be between relatives or between people who do not have precisely that family relationship. Like the case of friends.

Ascending kinship

It deals with the link that exists between two or more people from the consanguineous point of view or by emotional and/or legal bond, which, depending on the degree of the family tree, defines a person in the following ascending order as father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather. . That is to say, as one goes “ascending” in the genealogical degree, the name that corresponds to it is given.

Collateral kinship

Contrary to the criterion of straight line kinship, in this case the link that exists between two or more people without being directly related is taken. The most common cases are siblings and cousins. Within the family tree it is clear to define them because they form the branches of the family sequence. It does not obey an ascending or descending line.

Aescendant kinship

The criterion works in a similar way to “ascending kinship” only that it is applied in the opposite direction, that is, the type of kinship that corresponds to it is named in the following order, such as children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and so on. The family tree and the level that occupies in relation to one person with another is taken as a criterion; and within the straight line of said family tree.

ordinary kinship

Contrary to “preferred kinship”, this defines the cousins ​​and uncles of the person taken as a reference. That is, they are those that, within a genealogical structure, correspond to the fourth and sixth level degrees. Fulfilling this rule, it is easy to distinguish this type of kinship. It can clearly be determined within a family tree.

Preferred relationship

In this case, kinship is determined by the family relationship that exists strictly between siblings and/or nephews. That is, they are defined by the close degree that exists in two or even three levels. This means that there is a combination between the straight line of the tree and the first branches of the tree. Only in the early grades.

Religious Kinship

This type of relationship is formed from the marriage between two people who perform this act in a religious way. For this reason, this link is only recognized by the so-called “canon law” and not by civil law. In addition to marriage, there are other sacramental acts that give a relationship to people according to the sacrament in question, such as baptisms, for example.
