Types of polymer

The concept of polymers from the point of view of the history of science was first applied by a scientist named Jons Berzelius , of Swedish origin. He coined the term to be able to refer to the series of compounds of chemical origin that have the same formula among themselves although they differ in relation to the weight of the molecules . This concept allowed an important advance in the study of molecular chemistry.

In this sense, it is understood that the concept of ” polymerization ” is closely related to the idea of ​​the reactions that occur in the chemical elements called ” monomers “. The latter correspond to the basic unit of molecules within chemistry. This element is taken as the basis for the analysis of molecular variables.

All polymers have within their molecular components, a wide variety of properties such as mechanical, electrical, optical and thermal, which give each polymer its own identity. We have clear examples of this in electrical appliances, in clothing, in some plastic components and, above all, in chemical components.

Addition Polymer

The main characteristic of this type of polymer is that the monomers that make it up are not distributed in a saturated manner. This is the result of a reaction process resulting from polymerization in which the molecular mass multiplies exponentially. To this end, a radicalization process takes place between the cations and anions.

Condensation Polymer

It is a type of polymer that has the characteristic of presenting multifunctionality in the bonds, compacting the molecules until they become what are called macromolecules. These occur when there are several substances that are related to each other, causing reactions by joining together the molecules of each of them.


It is thus defined when in the chain of monomers, there is the presence of two or more different types of these. This makes the variety wider than in those of homopolymers. This type of polymer is widely used in the plastics industry to develop, and is known as plastics such as: acrylonitrile, butadiene, styrene, among others.

The key component of polymers is the monomer, when this is dispersed in its molecular component, in a linear way, it is defined as a linear polymer, for that simple reason. This linear sequence is usually called a chain which can be interrelated with other chains within a larger molecular set.

As the concept itself suggests, these polymers are of natural origin, that is, they are found in the nature that surrounds us. One of the great benefits it offers to the chemical industry is that it is possible to create other polymers from these polymers. With the result obtained, they can be applied in various industries such as construction and technology, for example: rubber.

They are the result of strictly synthetic procedures in which there is no separation of the molecules. A clear example of this type of polymers are the well-known resins. The behavior and reaction is contrary to condensation polymers. The key in this is the multifunctionality of each of the molecules that are part of the chemical components.

Branched Polymer

In this case, the monomer chain is distributed from a series of branches, hence its name in the classification. From the physical point of view, these polymers show the characteristic of being very rigid and some others turn out to be highly brittle. Obviously that will depend on the molecular characteristics.

Synthetic polymers

Unlike natural polymers, these result from an industrial process in which these new polymers are artificially manufactured. The most common are the so-called polyethylene and nylon; which are used in many industries. They are for that reason very attractive for creation. This has been possible thanks to the advancement of inorganic chemistry especially.
