Types of collages

Collage is an artistic method that consists of adding different elements on a base, usually wood, fabric or paper. In this way, it is easy to achieve different shapes, tones, textures, among others.

The collage known today is a totally cubist invention. Historians have determined that its inventor was Georges Braque , who in 1911 began to place certain typographic elements and inscriptions on his paintings.

Types of collages

Paper collage

Paper collage originates from various textures , tones, paper class, and weight. Various artists integrate newsprint into collages, along with other papers.

Scrapbook paper, construction paper, cardstock, all have different colors, with different textures. The difference in tone, weight, and texture in the collage attracts attention and adds mystery to the technique.

Mosaic collage

Mosaic collage is possibly one of the most complicated collage modes, because the images form a sticky image . Photos cannot be arranged in columns and rows, as in the network class collage.

Decoupage collage

This type of collage groups layers of paper together to generate a single three-dimensional image. Various artists use glass to achieve this image. Decoupage images are joined with flat images and other decoupage works to form the collage cluster.

Network collage

The network collage consists of a succession of photographs arranged in a grid pattern. The images are arranged in organized columns and rows. This makes it easier for the public to mentally divide the images without inhibiting the recognition of similarities and adherent objects. This style is possibly the type of collage with the lowest artistic level.

Three-dimensional collage

Although most collages are two-dimensional, some artists have attached a three-dimensional object to their collages.

The Spanish painter Pablo Picasso produced a three-dimensional collage with a cardboard surface in his well-known work “Guitar”, during the denouement of his career. The new dimension of the image gives texture and depth to these types of collage.

Stacked collage of photos

Stacked photo collages are probably the most common and easiest of all collage modes. This kind of collage is created from a series of images randomly placed on a base. Arrange the images in their organization in the stack to better highlight their image in the grouping.

Elements to make a collage

• Use marbled paper, tissues made of paper, photocopy paper, construction paper. The paper can be smooth, hard, or a combination of the two.
• Use portions of magazines or newspapers. The magazines of fashion and news may have some details that makes something precious collage. Newsprint can give a fun and unusual texture, as well as shades.
• Collect old scraps of wrapping paper. You can find this type of paper in stationery stores or bookstores.
• Use various adhesive tapes and aluminum foils . The tape can be different shades to give the collage color.
• Use photographs. Old photos add an old or retro look to the collage. In the same way, these photos provide a fun aspect to the work.
